Země leží v severní části Severní Ameriky a na přilehlých ostrovech, má rozlohu 9 976 140 km2. Je omýván Tichým, Severním ledovým a Atlantským oceánem (243 791 km pobřeží). Území pokrývají tundrové lesy, četná jsou jezera. Kanada je federativní stát. Po přechodu této bývalé francouzské državy do rukou britů (1763) se ji snažily v letech 1812 až 1814 ovládnout USA. Roku 1931 přiznala Británie Kanadě částečnou samostatnost. Dosud je však formální hlavou státu britská královna, kterou zastupuje generální guvernér. Zákonodárnou moc vykonává dvoukomorový parlament složený z Poslanecké sněmovny volené na 5 let, členové Senátu jsou doživotně jmenováni generálním guvernérem. Výkonnou moc vykonává vláda v čele s premiérem.

Vývoj OS: podle Bílé knihy o obraně z roku 1994 buduje Kanada menší a výkonnější OS s větším důrazem na provádění mírových operací. V bojové pohotovosti bude udržována jednotka složená z různých druhů OS o síle 4000 příslušníků, určená k okamžitému nasazení v operacích pod záštitou OSN. Později má být posílena o dalších 6000 osob. Kanadské ozbrojené síly jsou plně profesionalizovány.
Poslání OS: plnění cílů kanadské obranné politiky: kolektivní bezpečnosti, kolektivní obrana a krizový management; obranu země zajišťují v úzké spolupráci s USA (tzv. bilaterální obrana).
Zahraniční mise: mírové operace (bývalá Jugoslávie, Haiti, Sýrie/Izrael), pozorovatelé OSN (např. Kypr, Egypt, Kuvajt).
V rámci mise SFOR velí Kanada mnohonárodní brigádě sestávající z čwských, britských a kanadských vojáků.
Druhy OS:
pozemní vojsko 21 900 osob,
vojenské letectvo 14 6000,
vojenské námořnictvo 9 400.
Polovojenské síly: kanadská královská jízdní policie
Výdaje na obranu: 8, 4 mld. USD (1996), tj. 1, 5% HDP
OS jiných států na kanadském území: nejsou; země však poskytuje rozsáhlá neobydlená území německé, nizozemské a britské armádě k výcvikovým účelům.
Zapojení do mnohonárodnostních sil:
I po odsunu sil z Evropy jsou stále k dispozici NATO. Udržují si nadále schopnost nasadit v případě potřeby brigádu. Jako součást hlavních obranných sil NATO spadá kanadská armáda na strategickém stupni pod Velitelství spojeneckých sil v Atlantiku. Na regionálním stupni je podřízena Západoevropskému velitelství.
